Why a free thing still deserves a check

Because the cost is attention rather than money, and attention is the thing nobody budgets. A persuasive session works on you after it ends — that is what it is for — and being aware of that is different from being suspicious of it.

Why launch week specifically needs its own checks

Because a fortnight concentrates a great deal of high-intent search into a few days, and that is exactly the condition imitation pages exist for. The volume is unusual, the urgency is real, and the two together make people move faster than they otherwise would.

None of that makes the underlying offer suspect. It does mean the ordinary habits - read the address bar, read the terms, capture what you agreed to - matter more this fortnight than they would in an ordinary month.
