Without a list: yes, with one caveat worth knowing
The method does not require an email list, which is most of its appeal to beginners. There is a genuine trade-off in that and it is worth understanding rather than glossing.
What replaces the list
The conversation. A direct message thread with someone who asked you a question does what an email sequence does - it lets you follow up - and it does it with far higher attention.
Messages get read at rates email cannot approach, and the person entered the thread deliberately. On engagement alone it is the stronger channel.
The trade-off, stated plainly
You do not own the connection. If the platform account goes, the conversations go with it, and an email list is portable in a way a follower count and a message thread are not.
That is a real risk rather than a theoretical one. It is also why the training teaches list building anyway - as an addition once traffic exists, not as a prerequisite before anything does.
What people mean when they insist on a list
They usually learned this business in an era when email was the only channel you could reach anyone on reliably, and that advice was correct then.
What changed is that direct messages now do the same job with better attention, at the point of highest interest, without asking anyone to leave the app. The principle survives; the channel moved.
Why not building one first is the right order
- An empty list is worth nothing. Building the container before there is anything to put in it is a fortnight spent on infrastructure.
- It adds steps at the point you can least afford them. Every extra step between attention and conversation costs people.
- You do not yet know what to send. The early conversations tell you what your audience actually wants, and that shapes the list when you build it.
When to start building one
Once conversations are happening regularly and you can see what people keep asking. At that point a list becomes an amplifier for something that already works rather than a container for something that does not exist.
What a list is genuinely better at
Reaching people again on your own terms, months later, without a platform deciding whether the message is delivered. That is a real advantage and it grows with time.
Which is why the answer is sequencing rather than either-or. Conversations first because they start earning sooner, a list afterwards because it protects what the conversations built.
The summary
Start without one, add one when there is traffic. The people who insist a list must come first are describing an older version of this business, and the people who never build one at all are accepting a real dependency they could have reduced.
